Hawks top Knicks in four-OT thriller; a look inside the numbers

The Knicks and Hawks kept playing and playing Sunday in Atlanta, until they had played the longest game in the NBA this season. They went four overtimes before the host Hawks prevailed 142-139.

The game almost went into a fifth OT, which would have tied the record for the league’s shot-clock era, but the Knicks’ Courtney Lee barely missed a 3-point attempt at the horn. Lee had forced a third OT with a 3.

A game of this length is bound to produce some quirky stats. A quick look at the most interesting ones from this game:

“I started trying to pull them out, but I couldn’t because my hands were so weak. The nurses came running in to stop me. You ever had a really bad dream, where you’re trying to run away from a monster or some shit, and you just can’t run? Your legs don’t work like they should, and the monster is coming right behind you, and it’s like you’re in slow motion. That’s what it felt like.”

“After all the shit I had done, I was surprised to see her. Honestly, that’s when I knew that I was probably in bad shape.”

“At that point in my life, I was doing coke every day. Pretty much every second of free time that I had, I was doing coke. I couldn’t control it. … I didn’t want to control it.”

Furthermore, Porter is incredibly efficient in all of those areas. You wouldn’t expect someone who scores 6.0 spot-up points per game (a number only Kawhi Leonard can match) to rank in the 98.3 percentile with 1.41 points per possession. As you can see in the table below, Porter even ranks in the 95.6 percentile in scoring off of cuts, 84.3 percentile in converting putbacks and 73.0 percentile in transition scoring. He’s basically a superstar of role players.rangers_574-115x115
