Kobe Bryant sends signed jersey to brother of unarmed teen killed by cop

Kobe Bryant sent a special birthday gift to Kevon Edwards, the brother of Jordan Edwards, the unarmed 15-year-old who was fatally shot by a Dallas police officer while leaving a party last month.

The former NBA star mailed Kevon a signed Lakers jersey and two pairs of his signature shoes, to help him celebrate his 17th birthday.

Kevon was reportedly in the car with Jordan when an officer opened fire, striking Jordan in the head.

Everybody loves dingers. The more, the merrier. Chicks dig the longball, and so forth. But let’s calm down about Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger.

Being the new Atlanta Hawks isn’t the worst thing in the world. That also means no superteam expectations.

Cavaliers agree to terms with Jose Calderon

The Cavaliers have signed veteran guard Jose Calderon.

Calderon’s agency reported the signing on Twitter.

The 6-3 Spaniard will be joining his eighth team in 12 years. He averaged 3.4 points, 2.1 assists and 1.8 rebounds per game this past season for the Hawks. He also shot better than 31 percent from 3-point range.

The deal will be for one year at the league minimum, per The Vertical. The Cavs plan for Calderon to be their back-up point guard to Kyrie Irving. They are also reportedly shopping Iman Shumpert and hope to re-sign guard Kyle Korver.

Maccagnan is facing the full, fiery blast of New York heat after last year’s meltdown and this year’s … well, apparently “tanking” is a sensitive term. The miscalculations of last offseason led to tearing things down and starting over this year. The Jets’ eternal curse of being unable to find or develop a quarterback is clawing out of the ground again. He may be facing a coaching decision at the end of this year, too, although, as it’s been said plenty, Todd Bowles deserves not to be judged by this season.

This teardown and rebuild, meanwhile, is grinding along slowly and painfully. Brown is stockpiling draft picks and has worked their high picks well — but they’ll know soon enough whether having lots of picks means as much as having good players. Trying to get clever with the Brock Osweiler trade might leave them stuck with him. They parted with some professional veterans (Andrew Hawkins, Terrell Pryor) arguably too soon. The payoff better be really, really good.browns_033

Chiefs’ Tyreek Hill more mature, still improving ahead of second season

The second-year Chiefs receiver told Omnisport Monday evening that Maclin taught him how to be a pro off the field and it’s important to be more than a football player. Hill said Maclin became like a brother during their one season together in Kansas City and helped the 23-year-old with a checkered past understand the importance of giving back to the community and taking care of one’s family.

He helped me mature in a lot of ways, Hill said of Maclin. I can tell it. My family can tell it. This organization can tell it. I’m growing every day as a young man.

Or maybe they just want the appearance of legitimacy to gain greater leverage with teams who might covet Adams at the trade deadline.

If this is indeed a ruse, you have to admire the team’s willingness to keep pushing the fib further to try to maximize the benefit. It’s one thing to mention the move as an everything’s on the table possibility. It’s another thing to allow reporters to take video of Freeman fielding grounders and making the long throw from third to first. It’s still another thing to have Freeman talk to reporters about it afterward.

How they move up: Jonas Valanciunas finally makes the leap into stardom. Barring that, there’s no superteam in Toronto anytime soon. With the Ibaka and Lowry signings, the team has trod into luxury tax territory, making its flexibility almost nil. Being a perennial playoff team with 50-ish wins shouldn’t be laughed at. But they’re definitely a tier below in the star department.

Yet, in the end, Cleveland fans got the last laugh. The Indians scored 12 unanswered runs after the fourth inning, and chased Cole Hamels, who was making his first start since late April due to an oblique injury, out of the game with seven earned runs to his name in just 4 1/3 innings.

Indians starter Carlos Carrasco was even worse. He allowed eight earned runs off of six hits, three walks and three home runs in just 3 1/3 innings. Cleveland’s once-strong rotation has struggled mightily this season.

Despite the pitching flaws, Cleveland moved a half-game ahead of the Twins in the mediocre AL Central with the win. The defending World Series runners-up could still make another postseason run this year, but it needs to start performing up to its potential on a consistent basis.
